Retaining patients in care is perhaps the single greatest variable in optimizing medication adherence, sustaining healthy behavior changes, preventing disease transmissions, and decreasing morbidity/mortality. Creating a welcoming clinic culture and linking patients with health care providers who focus on patient strengths, skills, self-efficacy, and motivation rather than on deficits and pathologies have demonstrated effectiveness in retaining HIV-infected patients in care. This session will address the use of strength-based strategies, including the use of motivational interviewing, reflective listening and reframing.
